Franco Zeffirelli

Director

Born - 12 February 1923, Florence, Italy
Died - 15 June 2019

Tall, dark, friendly-looking Italian director, originally a costume and production designer, whose films painted beautiful pictures but did not always live up to expectations. His reputation in fact, based on spectacular successes in the theatre, especially in the realm of opera, proved greater than his achievements in the cinema. Many of his films had a romantic slant, and that was certainly true of his first, Camping in 1958. Within a decade, he had assumed a higher profile and was directing a mix of attractive newcomers and established stars: The Taming of the Shrew (1966), Romeo and Juliet (1968), Brother Sun, Sister Moon (1972), The Champ (1979), Endless Love (1981), Otello (1986), Young Toscanini (1988), Hamlet (1990), Sparrow (1993), Jane Eyre (1996), Tea With Mussolini (1999, arguably his best film) and Callas Forever (2002), his last.
