Ingrid Pitt

Actress

Born - 21 November 1937, Poland
Died - 23 November 2010

Voluptuous, tawny-haired, larger-than-life, Polish-born actress of colourful background whose fierce acting style was seen at its best in three horror films she made for Britain's Hammer and Amicus studios in the early 1970s. After escaping from both a Nazi concentration camp and, later, an oppressive East German regime, she made her film debut in Spain, where she was appearing with the National Theatre. This was in El Sonido Prehistorico (1964). But she was soon in small roles in international films - Doctor Zhivago (1965), Chimes at Midnight (1966) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966). More substantial parts in The Omegans (1967) and Where Eagles Dare (1968) led to her trio of eye-catching lady vampires in Countess Dracula, The Vampire Lovers and The House That Dripped Blood (all 1970). Later films included The Wicker Man (1973), Who Dares Wins (1982), Hanna's War (1988), The Asylum (2000), Minotaur (2006) and Sea of Dust (2008), her last. Troubled with heart problems in her later years, she collapsed in a London street on her way to a function in her honour, and died a few days later.
