Dorothy Malone

Actress

Born - 30 January 1924, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Died - 19 January 2018

Pretty, dark-haired, soulful-looking American leading actress. Born Dorothy Maloney, and on the tall side for the 1940s, she was signed (and wasted) by RKO-Radio at 18, and later went to Warners, where she got better roles, including the sexy bookstore girl in The Big Sleep (1946). Fed up with a run of brunette nice girls, she turned to blonde floozies and almost immediately won an Oscar for the role of her career in Written on the Wind (1956). But now she was typed in another kind of role and 'instead of getting better, my parts just got worse'. She turned to TV and a longish run in Peyton Place. More than 70 other roles in a busy movie career included those in The Falcon and the Co-Eds (1943), Step Lively (1944), Too Young to Know (1945), Janie Gets Married (1946), Two Guys from Texas (1948), Flaxy Martin (1949), Convicted (1950), Scared Stiff (1953), Loophole (1954), Pushover (1954), Artists and Models (1955), Man of a Thousand Faces (1957), The Tarnished Angels (1957), Too Much, Too Soon (1958), Warlock (1959), The Last Voyage (1960), The Last Sunset (1961), Fate is the Hunter (1964), Carnal Circuit (1969), The Man Who Would Not Die (1975), Golden Rendezvous (1977), The Day Time Ended (1979), The Being (1983), Rest in Pieces (1987) and Basic Instinct (1991), her last. French film star Jacques Bergerac was the first of her three husbands.
