Regal blonde model and singer who was taken up by Hollywood in the early 1940s and kept busy throughout most of the decade (often in westerns) until she quit films for the Broadway Stage, where she enjoyed great success over almost 1000 appearances in the title role of the original run of Kiss Me Kate. Later she tried TV, finding a hit series with the ghost comedy Topper opposite her second husband Robert Sterling, who died in 2006. Born Anne Jeffreys Carmichael, she proved a hard worker from the start, with 20 films in her first two years in pictures: Billy the Kid Trapped (1942), I Married an Angel (1942), Flying Tigers (1942), Chatterbox (1943), Crime Doctor (1943), Wagon Tracks West (1943), Step Lively (1944), Nevada (1944), Dillinger (1945), Dick Tracy (1945), Genius at Work (1946), Dick Tracy vs Cueball (1946), Riff-Raff (1947), Trail Street (1947) and Return of the Bad Men (1948). Later work includes Boys' Night Out (1962), Panic in the City (1968), Southern Double Cross (1976), Clifford (1994), Richard III (2007) and Sins Expiation (2012), her last.
