Marta Eggerth

Singer/actress

Born - 17 April 1912, Budapest, Hungary
Died - 26 December 2013

Cute, round-faced, light-haired Hungarian singer who could also act and dance, and was entertaining at 10. A star of German and UK films at 20, with a beautiful coloratura soprano voice, she fled to America in the late 1930s and appeared in a few Hollywood films before going back to Germany, later returning to America and becoming an American citizen. Her films were almost all light musicals: the foreign-language version of the UK's Let's Love and Laugh (1931), Ein Lied, ein Kuss, eine Madel (1932), The Emperor's Waltz (1933), My Heart is Calling (1934), The Unfinished Symphony (1934), The Divine Spark/Casta Diva (1935), La Chanson du Souvenir (1937), Waltz Melodies (1938), For Me and My Gal (1942) and Presenting Lily Mars (1943). After touring with her husband, fellow opera singer Jan Kiepura, whom she had met when they co-starred in My Heart is Calling, she made Addio Mimi! (1947), Valse Brilliante (1949), Land of Smiles (1952) and Springtime in Berlin (1957), her last. Unfortunately, her husband died from heart disease at 64 after 30 years of marriage, but she continued singing on stage into her nineties.
