William Campbell

Actor

Born - 30 October 1923, Newark, New Jersey, USA
Died - 28 April 2011

Black-haired, easily-sneering actor whose early characters oozed rebellion and attitude. Eager young studs mingled with vicious psychopaths, and his study of Death Row victim Caryl Chessman was much admired, although it did not lead to better roles, and he spent much of the rest of his career in episodes of such TV series as Star Trek and The Streets of San Francisco. After drama school training, he made his movie debut appropriately in Breakthrough (1950) and for the next few years enjoyed decent roles: Operation Pacific (1951), Holiday for Sinners (1952), Escape from Fort Bravo (1953), The High and the Mighty (1954), Man Without a Star (1955), Cell 2455 - Death Row (1955), Love Me Tender (1956), Walk the Proud Land (1956), Eighteen and Anxious (1957), The Naked and the Dead (1958), Night of Evil (1961) and The Haunted and the Hunted (1963). He regressed to smaller roles in Hush...Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), The Money Trap (1965), Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971), Black Gunn (1972) and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974), then 20 years of TV series before his final feature film, Gettysburg in 1993. Three times married, he died following a long illness.
