Fair-haired, tall, hunk-ish, German-born leading man, born Joseph Meibes, whose family fled to America in the early 1930s. A stage debut in the late 1940s was followed by TV in 1950, before he he entered into an on-off contract with MGM that included Teresa (1951), Rhapsody (1953), The Student Prince (1954), Green Fire (1954) and Bad Day at Black Rock (1955). Freelancing, he had the title role in The Return of Jack Slade/Texas Rose (1955), before making The Cruel Tower (1956), Forty Guns (1957), Oregon Passage (1957), Day of the Badman (1958), Under 10 Flags (1960), the title role in Pretty Boy Floyd (1960), Slave Queen of Babylon (1962), 7 Faces of Dr Lao (1964), Operation Atlantis (1965), The Destructors (1966), Treasure of Pancho Villa (1967), The Money Jungle (1968), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), Hustler Squad (1975), Crash! (1976), The House of the Dead (1978), Final Mission (1984), The Dream Prince (1987) and Primary Target (1988) - then much television before The Far Side of Jericho (2006), his last. He died from pneumonia, survived by his (second) wife of 45 years, actress Karen Huston (later Karen Ericson), and two children.
