Tim Pigott-Smith

Actor

Born - 13 May 1946, Rugby, Warwickshire, England
Died - 7 April 2017

Tall, strongly-built English stage and film actor with receding fair hair who, despite his cheerful outward appearance, often played unpleasant characters as well as being a formidable Shakespearian. He made a considerable mark as Ronald Merrick in the TV series The jewel in the Crown in the early 1980s. On stage and TV from the 1960s, his film appearances came later and were fewer than one would have wished: Aces High (1976), Joseph Andrews (1977), Sweet William (1980), Clash of the Titans (1981), A State of Emergency (1986), The Remains of the Day (1993), Bloody Sunday (2002), Alexander (2004), V for Vendetta (2005), Flyboys (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Alice in Wonderland (2010), RED 2 (2013), Jupiter Ascending (2015), Whisky Galore (2016) and Victoria and Abdul (2017), his last. Often seen in these latter years in patrician and/or authoritative roles, he married actress Pamela Miles, who frequently acted alongside her husband, and survives him.
