Burly, 6ft 7in director of westerns, a more handsome version of his father, Oscar-winning character star Victor McLaglen. An assistant director for a decade from 1945, he made his solo debut with a good western, Gun the Man Down in 1956, but the main body of his film work comes after he had directed more than 200 episodes of the TV western series Gunsmoke/Gun Law and Have Gun, Will Travel. Other movies include the Abductors (1957), Freckles (1960), The Rare Breed (1966), The Way West (1967), Bandolero! (1968), Chisum (1970), Dynamite Man from Glory Jail (1971), Cahill, United States Marshal (1973), The Last Hard Men (1976), The Wild Geese (1978), The Sea Wolves (1980), Sahara (1983), Return from the River Kwai (1989) and Eye of the Widow (1991), his last.
