He scored a success as the sympathetic young homosexual in A Taste of Honey (1961), before settling into unsmiling character parts: Suspect (1960), Petticoat Pirates (1961), HMS Defiant (1962), Sparrows Can't Sing (1962), The Ceremony (1963), Alfie (1966), Smashing Time (1967), The Fixer (1968), Start the Revolution Without Me (1969), The Devils (1971), Gawain and the Green Knight (1973), Ghost Story (1974), Barry Lyndon (1975), Joseph Andrews (1976), The Prince and the Pauper (1977), Stories from a Flying Trunk (1979), Nutcracker (1982), Comrades (1986), The Krays (1990), 'Let Him Have It' (1991), Princess Caraboo (1994), The Emperor's New Clothes (2001), The Phantom of the Opera (2004), The Lost City of Z (2016), Jusqu'a la Lie (2019), his last, and more. He died following a fall.
