Blonde, feline leading actress with high cheekbones, at first in innocent, later predatory roles, one of which, in Tom Jones (1963), won her an Oscar nomination. Taken to live in Australia at six, she had broken into British films by the early 1950s, almost immediately in starring roles: Wings of Danger (1952), The Angel Who Pawned Her Harp (1954), Passage Home (1955), The Woman for Joe (1955) - her co-star in the latter, George Baker, died one day after her - The Admirable Crichton (1957), Jet Storm (1959), The Naked Edge (1961), Rattle of a Simple Man (1964), Hombre (1966), Negatives (1968), The Wicker Man (1973), Duet for Four (1981) and The Boy Who Had Everything (1995), her last. She had returned to Australia in 1975 with her third husband, playwright Anthony Shaffer, where she founded an outdoor theatre. Her second husband was the actor Sean Connery. She died from cancer.
