Jennifer Jones

Born - 2 March 1919, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA
Died - 17 December 2009

Strikingly beautiful American actress with a mass of dark curly hair who, after an uncertain start under her real name (Phylis Isley), soared to fame in The Song of Bernadette (1943), which won her an Oscar: she was also nominated in the three succeeding years for Since You Went Away, Love Letters and Duel in the Sun, by which time she had become partnered with producer David O Selznick (married 1949 to his death in 1965). Wed to actor Robert Walker from 1939 to 1945, she arrived with him in Hollywood in '39 and made her debut as the heroine in the John Wayne western New Frontier/Frontier Horizon (1939). Later films included Portrait of Jennie (1948), Carrie (1952) and Love is a Many-Splendored Thing (1956 - as a Eurasian woman, she received her final Oscar Nomination). She was a rather mature leading lady in The Barretts of Wimpole Street and A Farewell to Arms (both 1957), after which she moved into semi-retirement. The actor Robert Walker Jr is her son.
