Stocky, round-faced, plum-nosed Welsh character actor with disappearing dark hair, fondly remembered by TV viewers as the sardonic teacher Mr Price from the long-running comedy series Please, Sir!. He also had a prolific, if unobtrusive career in films: A Run for Your Money (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Captain's Paradise (1953), The Night My Number Came Up (1955), The Long Arm (1956), The Horse's Mouth (1958), Some People (1962), Zulu (1964), Sky West and Crooked (1966), Twisted Nerve (1968), Please, Sir! (1971), Under Milk Wood (1972), The Mutations (1974) and the short Queen Sacrifice (1988), his last, although he continued appearing on TV until 2000. A victim of Alzheimer's Disease, he died three weeks before his diamond wedding anniversary to actress Jill Clifford.
