Brawny, tawny-haired American bodybuilder and actor who had cameo roles in movies for years before success in Italian muscleman sword-and-sandal epics of the 1960s. Born Rupert Edmund Holovchik, his film appearances include those in Because of Him (1946), Fabiola (1949), All Ashore (1952), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Dangerous When Wet (1953), Demetrius and the Gladiators (1954), Hell and High Water (1954), The Country Girl (1954), Female on the Beach (1955), I Died a Thousand Times (1955), Raw Edge (1956), Bus Stop (1956), South Pacific (1958), The Wild Women of Wongo (1958), to Italy for Colossus and the Amazon Queen (1960), Ursus (1961), Valley of the Lions (1961), Maciste Against the Pirate King (1962) and Ursus in the Land of Fire (1963), then back to America for many TV credits until 1980. His only latter-day film appearance came in Dinosaur Valley Girls in 1996. Survived by Marcelline, his wife of 63 years, and two children.
