Sturdy, dark-haired, neckless, intense American actor best remembered for his leading role opposite Sally Field in Norma Rae (1979). After theatrical experience, he was first seen by viewers in the TV movie Ride With Terror (1963). He did not, however, become a film regular until he was well into his thirties: Where's Poppa? (1970), Slaughterhouse-Five (1972), Your Three Minutes Are Up (1973), The Super Cops (1974), Won Ton Ton - The Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1975), A Question of Guilt (1978), Zorro: The Gay Blade (1981), Romantic Comedy (1983), Phar Lap (1983), Rhinestone (1984), Seven Hours to Judgment (1988), Night Falls on Manhattan (1996), Just the Ticket (1998), Personal Velocity (2002), Garden State (2004) and A Little Help (2010), his last. He was married to actresses Linda Lavin and, for the last 36 years of his life, Jessica Walter, who survives him. He died from pneumonia complications.
