Intelligent-looking American actor with brown hair and large, round head who made his name with his portrait of president Franklin Delano Roosebelt in two large-scale TV movies, and remained in demand for portraits of professional men for the rest of his career. After an inauspicious beginning in Lady Liberty (1971), he was soon in demand: The Paper Chase (1973), The Great Gatsby (1974), The Great Waldo Pepper (1975), Brass Target (1978), Reds (1981), Annie (1982, again as FDR), Mrs Soffel (1984), The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), The Lost Boys (1987), Big Business (1988), Accidental Hero (1992), Nixon (1995), Better Living (1998), The Cat's Meow (2001), Intolerable Cruelty (2003), The Aviator (2004), Factory Girl (2006), The Skeptic (2009), Christmas Oranges (2012) and Coach of the Year (2015), his last. The second of his two wives (both divorced) was actress/writer Leigh Curran. He died from brain cancer.
