Paul Wendkos

Director

Born - 22 September 1922, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
Died - 12 November 2009

Prolific, craggy, underrated Hollywood director, who made more than 100 feature films, TV movies and episodes of TV drama series. After starting his career on the off-Broadway stage, Wendkos made a documentary, Dark Interlude, followed in the same year (1955) by his first cinema film, The Burglar, from the off-filmed noir thriller by David Goodis. His subsequent films often made the most of umpromising material, and included The Case Against Brooklyn (1958), Face of a Fugitive (1959), Gidget (1959, his biggest commercial success), Angel Baby (1961), Attack on the Iron Coast (1967), Guns of the Magnificent Seven (1968, the second-best of that series), and Hell Boats (1969), before he went into TV movies, of which Haunts of the Very Rich (1972), The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975) and Scorned and Swindled (1984) are the best. He continued directing films for TV until 1999. He died from a lung infection following a stroke.
