Fair-haired French actress with full, doll-like features, born Marie-Madeleine Lebeau and the last surviving member of the credited cast from Casablanca (1942), in which she played Humphrey Bogart's discarded lover. After a brief beginning in French films - Jeunes Filles en Detresse (1939) - she and her then-husband, actor Marcel Dalio (who was also in Casablanca), fled to America, where she made a few films before resuming her career in post-war Europe: Hold Back the Dawn (1941), Gentleman Jim (1942), Paris After Dark (1943), Music for Millions (1944), Les Chouans (1947), The Secret of Monte-Cristo (1948), Cage of Gold (1950), Sins of Madeleine (1951), Royal Affairs in Versailles (1954), Napoleon (1955), Parisienne (1957), Le Chemin des Ecoliers (1959), Eight and a Half (1963), Angelique (1964), Duel at Rio Bravo (1965), and La Bouquetiere des Innocents (1967), her last. She died after breaking her thigh bone in a fall. Her second husband, screenwriter Tullio Pinelli, died in 2009.
