Dark-haired English actor of rugged, square-faced good looks, who moved from repertory work to TV roles in his late twenties. Once considered for the role of James Bond in 1962, he worked steadily thereafter, while never rising above 'B' leads and supporting parts in more prestigious pictures. Born Douglas Malin, his films include Murder on the Campus (1961), The Password is Courage (1962), The L-Shaped Room (1962), The Partner (1963), Heavens Above! (1963), Seance on a Wet Afternoon (1964), Blind Corner (1964), The Pleasure Girls (1965), Doctor Zhivago (1965), Game for Three Losers (1966), I'll Never Forget What's 'Is Name (1967), Attack on the Iron Coast (1968), Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968), Arthur! Arthur! (1969), Nobody Ordered Love (1972), Fern the Red Deer (1977), Richard's Things (1980), Claudia (1985), Captured (2003) and An Adventure in Space and Time (2013), his last. His third wife was his Coronation Street co-star Sue Nicholls, who survives him. He died from Alzheimer's disease.
