Tall, leathery, prematurely white-haired character actor, almost always seen as villains in westerns (on TV and film) until the mid 1970s. After service in both World War Two and the Korean War, he turned to an acting career in the 1950s. making his film debut midway through that decade: The Great Locomotive Chase (1955), Westward Ho, the Wagons! (1956), Gunsight Ridge (1957), Ride a Crooked Trail (1958). Following four years as Shotgun Gibbs in TV's The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp, he resumed his film career: The Gun Hawk (1963), Sword of Ali Baba (1965), Gunpoint (1966), Cool Hand Luke (1967, as Boss Godfrey), Firecreek (1968), Death of a Gunfighter (1969), The Wild Country (1970), Yuma (1971), One Little Indian (1973), The Midnight Man (1974), A Small Town in Texas (1976), Moonshine County Express (1977), Battle Beyond the Stars (1979), Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985) and Dark Before Dawn (1988). His last feature-length work was the TV movie Gunsmoke: To the Last Man in 1992.
