Died - 23 November 2018

Austere, round-faced British cinematographer with dark, receding hair who later turned director with a mixed bag of films, some of them major critical successes. Working behind the camera from an early age, Calling Bulldog Drummond (1951) was the first of his many credits as assistant cameraman. His work as director of photography included Information Received (1961), Band of Thieves (1962), Lawrence of Arabia (1963, second unit), The Masque of the Red Death (1964), Fahrenheit 451 (1966), Far from the Madding Crowd (1967) and Petulia (1968). A painstaking perfectionist, his films as director, often dealing with mental disturbance, included Walkabout (1971), Don't Look Now (1973), The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), Bad Timing (1980), Eureka (1983), Castaway (1986), Track 29 (1988), The Witches (1990), Cold Heaven (1991), Two Deaths (1995) and Puffball: The Devil's Eyeball (2005), his last. Actresses Susan Stephen and Theresa Russell were the first two of his three wives.
