Bearded, bespectacled, black-haired Hungarian cinematographer, noted for his vibrant use of colour and working in Hollywood from the early 1960s. He won an Oscar for Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Other work included The Time Travelers (1964), The Road to Nashville (1967), The Picasso Summer (1969), McCabe & Mrs Miller (1971), Deliverance (1972), The Long Goodbye (1973), The Sugarland Express (1974), The Deer Hunter (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980), The River (1984), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Maverick (1994), The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), The Body (2001), The Black Dahlia (2006), You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger (2010), Compulsion (2013) and Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks (2014), his last.
