Born - 23 May 1927, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
Died - 6 January 2021

Dark-haired, square-built, heavy-headed, often bespectacled American actor, a formidable interpreter of Chekhov and Shakespeare on stage, but confined to character parts in films, often as doctors or other professional men. A cousin of the TV producer Nat Hiken, who made the long-running Phil Silvers Show, he entered films at 30, repeating his stage role (Telegin) in Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (1957). Subsequent films included The Goddess (1958), The Power and the Glory (1961), Invitation to a Gunfighter (1964), The Three Sisters (1966), Funnyman (1967), Company of Killers (1970), The Candidate (1972), Fuzz (1972), A Case of Rape (1974), Reds (1981), Blackout (1985) and Shadow Makers/Fat Man and Little Boy (1989), his last. Barbara, his wife of almost 60 years, survives him.
