Richard Williams

Animator

Born - 19 March 1933, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Died - 6 August 2019

Innovative director of animation. At 22, he moved to England, where his first short feature (33 minutes), The Little Island (1958), won a BAFTA award as best animated film of the year. At the height of his fame, Williams ran his own three-storey 'animation works' in London's Soho Square and became a whiz at providing animated title sequences for some big mainstream hits, including two of the 'Pink Panther' films. For years he worked on his ambitious cartoon feature, The Thief and the Cobbler which, long delayed in the gestation, was eventually released in 1993. In the meantime, he had won further kudos with his work as animation director on Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1987). He ended his career as he had begun it, with a short work titled Prologue in 2015. It was nominated for an Oscar. He died from natural causes.
