Alain Resnais

Director

Born - 3 June 1922, Vannes, France
Died - 1 March 2014

Shock-haired, intellectual French film director who rose to fame with the nouvelle vague of the late 1950s and early 1960s that added several young French auteurs to the international scene. After a first big success with the grimly affecting and atmospheric Nazi death-camp documentary Night and Fog (1955), Resnais continued to aggravate and impress in equal proportions with fictional feature films: Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), Last Year in Marienbad (1961), Muriel (1963), La Guerre est Finie (1966), Stavisky... (1974), Providence (1977), Mon Oncle d'Amerique (1980), La Vie est un Roman (1983), Melo (1986), Smoking/No Smoking (1993), Same Old Song (1997), Coeurs (2006) and Life of Riley (2014), his last. The second of his two wives was actress Sabine Azema.
