Dynamic diva of the pop world, the 'singer who put the soul in rock 'n' roll'. Escaping an abusive marriage to one-time singing partner Ike Turner, she soon became an internationally-revered star, with such hits as River Deep, Mountain High. Just the five film appearances, in Tommy (1975), Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985), Last Action Hero (1993) and finally, briefly as herself at the end of Tina: What's Love Got to Do With it (1993), which won Angela Bassett an Oscar. Born Anna Mae Bullock, she died from natural causes, after suffering for some years with kidney problems.
