Burly, dark-haired New Yorker who also wrote, produced and directed in addition to acting in a wide range of often Brooklynesque leading roles. After writing the successful film Lovers and Other Strangers (1970), based on his own play, he broke into movie acting with the appropriately titled Made for Each Other (1971), written with and co-starring his real-life wife Renee Taylor (born Renee Wexler in 1933). For a while popular in offbeat leading roles, he made Cops and Robbers (1973), Mixed Company (1974), The Big Bus (1976), Chapter Two (1979), My Favorite Year (1982), Blame It on Rio (1983), The Woman in Red (1984) and Transylvania 6-5000 (1985). Seguing into character roles, he was seen in It Had to Be You (1989), Coupe de Ville (1990), Jersey Girl (1992), Night of the Archer (1994), Ringer (1996), Big Daddy (1999), Red Zone (2003), Boynton Beach Club (2005), Driving Me Crazy (2012) and Tango Shalom (2017), his last. Bologna, who also directed the films It Had to Be You (1989) and Love is All There Is (1996), died from pancreatic cancer, with Taylor, his wife of 52 years, surviving him.
