Tall American character actor of Croatian parentage, with wild, dark, receding hair, and often bushily moustachioed, which gave him an Italianate look. Largely on stage and TV for the early part of his career, he made his film debut in The Double Cure (1958). Later credits include Coogan's Bluff (1968), Popi (1969), Cold Turkey (1971), Made for Each Other (1971), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), The Don is Dead (1973), Newman's Law (1974), For Pete's Sake (1974), W C Fields and Me (1976), The Other Side of Midnight (1977), The Changeling (1980), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), Club Paradise (1986), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989), City of Hope (1991), Kiss & Tell (1997), Joe the King (1999), Friends and Family (2001), A Hole in One (2004), Running Funny (2007), Run It (2009), The Talk Man (2011), Emily & Tim (2015) and No Pay, Nudity (2016), his last. He died in his sleep, survived by his wife, Oscar-winning actress Olympia Dukakis, whom he married in 1962.
