Square-built, happy-looking, often bespectacled American character actress, in dozens of small roles but perhaps best remembered as the lady lobbying to 'save the clock tower' in Back to the Future. After theatrical and TV work in the 1960s, she entered cinema in 1970 and began a career there that spanned four decades. Born Elsa Rabinowicz, her extensive film CV, often as abrasive Jewish matrons, includes The Honeymoon Killers (1970), Such Good Friends (1971), The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight (1971), A Fan's Notes (1972), The Amityville Horror (1979), Fatso (1980), Paternity (1981), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981), Second Thoughts (1983), Back to the Future (1985), The Moderns (1988), Another You (1991), Indecent Proposal (1993), In the Line of Fire (1993), One Night Stand (1995), Titanic (1997), Italian Ties (2001), The Cutter (2005), Miriam (2006) and Answers to Nothing (2009), her last.
