Charles Jarrott

Director

Born - 16 June 1927, London, England
Died - 4 March 2011

Benign, bearded, balding British director who started out as an actor and stage manager before turning full time to direction in 1960. After a 'B' crime thriller, Time to Remember (1962), he caught the eye with a TV version of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 1968 and moved quickly into big-budget feature films. The first two, Anne of the Thousand Days (1969) and Mary, Queen of Scots (1971) were his most successful, but he had a notable failure with a musical version of Lost Horizon (1973). He continued to direct, however, and made The Dove (1974), the charming Escape from the Dark/The Littlest Horse Thieves (1976), The Other Side of Midnight (1977), The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (1980), Condorman (1981) and The Boy in Blue (1986), then a dozen TV movies before The Secret Life of Algernon (1997) and Turn of Faith (2002), his last. He was married three times, the second (for 23 years) to actress Katharine Blake. He died from prostate cancer.
