Concerned-looking English actor with prominent lips and frizzy, receding light-brown hair, for many years (1962-1976) a stalwart of TV's popular police series Z Cars and its successor Softly Softly, as Sergeant (later Inspector and Superintendent) John Watt. Born Frank Windsor Higgins, his film character roles included those in This Sporting Life (1963), The Jokers (1966), Spring and Port Wine (1969), Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971), Assassin (1973), Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974), Too Many Chefs (1978), The London Connection (1979), Dangerous Davies: The Last Detective (1981), Doll's Eye (1983), The Shooting Party (1984), Revolution (1985), Out of Order (1987) and Between Two Women (2004), his last. He died from Lewy body dementia complications, survived by his wife and daughter; his son David was killed in a car crash at 29.
