Barbara Jefford

Born - 26 July 1930, Plymstock, Devon, England
Died - 12 September 2020

Dark-haired, intense British actress, a formidable Shakespearian on stage, but largely a character actress in films after some early leading roles. First seen by TV viewers in the title role of a feature presentation of her stage triumph in the title role of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, she was kept busy dubbing vocally-challenged actresses in James Bond films before a movie debut proper in Ulysses (1967), as Molly Bloom. Subsequent film credits include The Bofors Gun (1968), The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968), Lust for a Vampire (1970), Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973), And the Ship Sails On (1983), Claudia (1985), Reunion (1989), When the Whales Came (1989), Where Angels Fear to Tread (1991), A Village Affair (1995), The Saint (1997), The Ninth Gate (1999), The Deep Blue Sea (2011) and Philomena (2013), her last. Born Mary Barbara Jefford and divorced from actor Terence Longdon, she later wed handsome star John Turner, who survives her after 53 years of marriage.
