Bespectacled, fuzzy-haired American director of sparse output. He cut his teeth on biker and horror exploitation films, often from the American-International studio, before briefly impressing the critics with such films as Two-Lane Blacktop. Such actors as Jack Nicholson and Warren Oates frequently appeared in his films. Born Monte Himmelbaum, he made his directorial debut with Beast from Haunted Cave in 1959, and the first of many editing credits came in The Wild Ride (1960). Further films as director included (portions of) Creature from the Haunted Sea (1961), (portions of) The Terror (1963), Back Door to Hell (1964), The Shooting (1966), Ride in the Whirlwind (1966), Target: Harry (1969), Two-Lane Blacktop (1971), Cockfighter (1973), The Killer Elite (1975), Sudden Death (1977), Avalanche Express (1979), Iguana (1988), Grey Knight (1993) and the short Stanley's Girlfriend (2006), his last. Actress Barboura Morris was the first of his three wives.
