Corn-haired, dark-eyed English actor with twisted smile who played jack-the-lad leading roles in UK 'B' features before gaining his slice of immortality as the stroppy, dad-baiting Mike in the long-running Till Death Us Do Part. Married four times, including once to his long-time partner, actress Patricia Phoenix, he had eight children, all daughters. On stage and TV in the 1950s, he began making films in the following decade: The Risk (1960), Pit of Darkness (1961), Mix Me a Person (1961), The L-Shaped Room (1962), The Hi-Jackers (1963), Of Human Bondage (1964), The Return of Mr Moto (1965), Corruption (1968), Till Death Us Do Part (1968), Neither the Sea Nor the Sand (1972), Brannigan (1974), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (1976), Confessions from the David Galaxy Affair (1979), Priest (1994), Owd Bob (1998), The Contender (2000), Revengers Tragedy (2002) and Upstaged (2005), his last. He died from a combination of a stroke, Alzheimer's Disease and heart problems.
