Square-featured, dark-haired, thin-lipped French leading actor with distinctive Gallic tones. Mainly a stage actor in his teenage years and early twenties, he made his film debut in Les Petites du Quai aux Fleurs (1944) and was soon a star of French cinema. Later, in middle age, he relished playing several villains. Many film appearances include those in Monsieur Vincent (1947), Manon (1949), Two Pennies Worth of Violets (1951), Royal Affairs in Versailles (1954), Tower of Lust (1955), No Escape (1958), Katia (1959), An Orchid for the Tiger (1965), The Road to Corinth (1967), The Bride Wore Black (1968), La Femme Infidele (1969), Mississippi Mermaid (1969), Borsalino (1970), Just Before Nightfall (1971), The Legend of Doom House (1971), The Assassination (1972), The Serpent (1973), The Suspects (1974), Thomas (1975), The Toy (1976), Le Raison d'Etat (1978), La Fuite en Avant (1980), Les Miserables (1982), Cop au Vin (1985), Tous les Matins du Monde (1991), Le Joie de Vivre (1993), Elisa (1995), My Father and I (2001), Les Cotelettes (2003), The Afternoon of Monsieur Andesmas (2004), The Last Mitterrand (2005), Je Cherche Jeanne (2010), Renoir (2012), The Art Dealer (2015), Villa Caprice (2020), Secret Ceremony (2022), his last, and many more.
