Virgilio Teixeira

Actor

Born - 26 October 1917, Funchal, Madeira
Died - 5 December 2010

Tall, dark-haired, cheerful-looking Portuguese actor seen in many Hollywood epics in supporting roles, while taking leading parts in Spanish and Portuguese-language films. He began his film career in 1943, his international ventures getting off to an unfortunate start in 1949 with a visit to Britain to feature (as Leo Texera) in the major flop The Bad Lord Byron. From the mid 1950s, though, he began to appear regularly in international epics and costume adventures, notably Alexander the Great (1956), The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), The Boy Who Stole a Million (1960), El Cid (1961), The Happy Thieves (1962), The Sign of Zorro (1963), The Fall of The Roman Empire (1963), Doctor Zhivago (1965), and Return of the Seven (1967), before returning to Spanish-language films. His last film, at the age of 92, was a nostalgic short, Endless Memories (2009), shot in his native Madeira, where he died.
