Robbie Coltrane

Actor

Born - 30 March 1950, Rutherglen, Scotland
Died - 14 October 2022

Massive, dark-haired Scottish character comedian who also skilfully turned his hand to dramatic performances. Born Anthony Robin Macmillan, his rounded features, small, penetrating eyes and floppy hair created a rich gallery of characters in British films, notably Rubeus Hagrid in the 'Harry Potter' pictures. And he won three Baftas for his performances in the lead role of the hit TV crime series Cracker. Whether as snarling, sweating ne'er-do-wells, sharpies on the make or friendly blue-collar workers, he left an indelible mark. Following a film debut in Death Watch (1979), his output included Flash Gordon (1980), Subway Riders (1981), Scrubbers (1982), Britannia Hospital (1982), Krull (1983), Revolution (1985), Mona Lisa (1986), Eat the Rich (1987), The Fruit Machine (1988), Henry V (1989), Nuns on the Run (1990), The Pope Must Die (1991), The Adventures of Huck Finn (1993), GoldenEye (1995), Buddy (1997), The World is Not Enough (1999), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002, and subsequent series), Ocean's Twelve (2004), Van Helsing (2004), Stormbreaker (2006), The Brothers Bloom (2008), Great Expectations (2012), Effie Gray (2014), his last, and more. Survived by his long-time partner (later wife) Rhona, and two children.
