Full-faced, full-lipped American actress with a mass of chestnut hair who, after a latish start, played strong-nerved heroines in Hollywood, British and French films - at her best in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She moved to Britain in the middle of the decade and later interviews showed she had completely lost her American accent: The Wild Angels (1966), New Face in Hell (1967), Eye of the Cat (1969), Marlowe (1969), Fragment of Fear (1970), The Love Machine (1971), Scorpio (1972), Running Scared (1972), The Legend of Hell House (1973), Shadowman (1973), The Spiral Staircase (1975), Blazing Magnum (1976), Flashpoint Africa (1978), The Saint and the Brave Goose (1979), Target (1985), Turnaround (1986), Hard to Be a God (1987) and Silence Like Glass (1989), her last. Born Virginia Gayle Hunnicutt, she was married to and divorced from actor David Hemmings and journalist/editor Sir Simon Jenkins.
