Steeple-tall supporting player, as well regarded for his time organising actors' workshops as for his work in films. After surviving an attack of polio in childhood which had him hospitalised for four years, he began an acting career that took him into films by the late 1960s, soon establishing him in the forefront of black character players: Up Tight! (1968), The Lost Man (1969), The Anderson Tapes (1971), Slaughter's Big Rip-Off (1973), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), The Deep (1977), The Jerk (1979), Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981), The Star Chamber (1983), Summer Rental (1985), Gardens of Stone (1987), Tap (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Mo' Better Blues (1990), The Gifted (1993), The Players' Club (1998), Virgin Again (2004) and Blood and Bone (2009), his last. He married actress Gloria Edwards, but she died in 1988 at just 43.
