Philip Seymour Hoffman

Actor

Born - 23 July 1967, Fairport, New York, USA
Died - 2 February 2014

Fair-haired, flush-faced, bearlike American actor with small, deep-set eyes, a major talent who won an Oscar for Capote (2005) and was nominated thrice more. His chameleon abilities to deal equally attractively with extravagant and withdrawn characters made him a popular choice for top supporting roles - and the occasional charismatic lead. After a rather inauspicious beginning in Triple Bogey on a Par 5 Hole (1991), he attracted attention in Leap of Faith and Scent of a Women the following year and was soon in demand: The Getaway (1994), Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), The Big Lebowski (1998), The Talented Mr Ripley (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Cold Mountain (2003), Mission Impossible III (2006), Doubt (2008), The Ides of March (2011), The Master (2012), A Late Quartet (2012), The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) and A Most Wanted Man (2014), his last. He was found dead from a suspected heroin overdose: more on that in due course.
