Taciturn, light-haired, softly-spoken actor with distinctive lower lip whose best roles all came during a five-year stay in the UK from 1957. Back in his native country, he was confined to sometimes small supporting roles as tough, often villainous characters. Born Cleve Richardson, he had begun his career in the war years, some of the early Hollywood titles including Thoroughbreds (1944), The Phantom of 42nd Street (1945), Without Reservations (1946), Chain Lightning (1949), The Red Badge of Courage (1951), The Big Heat (1953), Battle of Rogue River (1954) and The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956). There was a starring role in Courage of Black Beauty (1957), then the move to Britain, with leading roles in Floods of Fear (1958), Hell is a City (1959), Piccadilly Third Stop (1960), The Man Who Was Nobody (1960) and The Impersonator (1961). Back in the States, his later credits included Duel at Diablo (1965), The Poseidon Adventure (1972), The Towering Inferno (1974), The Enforcer (1976), Tilt (1978), The Boogens (1981) and many TV credits up to 1986. He died following a stroke, a few days after his 90th birthday.
