Jacques Rivette

Director

Born - 1 March 1928, Rouen, France
Died - 29 January 2016

Balding, benign, 'nouvelle vague' French director whose movies are almost all unorthodox, beautiful to watch, long, and alternately rewarding or infuriatingly playful. A cameraman and assistant director in the 1950s, Rivette (born Pierre Rivette) worked with some of France's most distinguished directors, including Jean Renoir, Francois Truffaut and Eric Rohmer. In 1960, he began directing films that were feature-length-plus, running anything from two-and-a-half to four hours, and including Paris Nous Appartient (1960), La Religieuse (1965), L'Amour Fou (1968), Celine and Julie Go Boating (1974), Le Pont du Nord (1981), L'Amour par Terre (1984), Wuthering Heights (1985), La Band des Quatre (1989), Joan of Arc (1994), Famille (1998), Va Savoir/Who Knows (2001), Histoire de Marie et Julien (2003), Ne Touchez Pas la Hache (2007) and 36 Vues du Pic Saint Loup (2009), his last.
