Arnold Laven

Director

Born - 23 February 1922, Chicago, Illinois, USA
Died - 13 September 2009

Director of tough, hard-hitting films whose talent was later dissipated in multiple episodes of TV crime series. Joining forces with producers Jules V Levy and Arthur Gardner while all three were serving in World War Two, Laven, after serving as script supervisor on He Walked by Night (1948), D.O.A. (1950) and others, made his directorial debut with Without Warning! (1952), which the UK censors thought strong enough to warrant an X certificate. He followed with other good monochrome thrillers: The Girl in Room 17 (1953) and Down Three Dark Streets (1954), but was soon entrenched on TV, emerging only to make The Rack (1956), Slaughter on 10th Avenue (1957), Geronimo (1962), The Glory Guys (1965), Rough Night in Jericho (1967) and Sam Whiskey (1969). Continuing to make TV series until the late 1980s, he died from pneumonia.
