Tall, plain-looking but with striking dark eyes, Murphy was an award-winning stage and TV actress who also made some film appearances, notably those as Gregory Peck's neighbour in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962) and Jason Robards' wife in the witty Any Wednesday (1966). In a long career, after relocating from Germany, where her father was a diplomat, in 1939, her other credits included The Last Illusion (1949), That Night! (1957), The Young Doctors (1961), Ben (1972), Walking Tall (1973), 40 Carats (1973), Julia (1977), The Hand (1981), September (1987), For the Boys (1991), Twenty Bucks (1993), Mighty Aphrodite (1995), Message in a Bottle (1999), Dust (2001), The Savages (2007) and The Romantics (2010), her last. She died from cancer of the aesophagus.
