Balding, slightly portly, thin-lipped, heavy-headed English character actor, in looks a cross between Peter Vaughan and Cecil Parker, and often seen as pompous and typically English figures of authority. Born Geoffrey Chater Robinson to a composer and a stage actress, he himself remained a man of the stage (and a passionate cricket enthusiast) throughout his long life, although he made numerous TV appearances and occasional films: Double Exit (1950), The Diamond (1954), Battle of the V-1/Missiles from Hell/Unseen Heroes (1958), The Strange World of Planet X (1958), Two Letter Alibi (1960), The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961), Position of Trust (1963), If.. (1968), 10 Rillington Place (1971), Endless Night (1972), O Lucky Man (1972), Crime in the City (1987) and Bethune: The Making of a Hero (1990). He continued acting for stage and TV until 2005. Survived by his wife Jennifer and their three children.
