Chantal Akerman

Director

Born - 6 June 1950, Brussels, Belgium
Died - 4 October 2015

Dark-haired, intense-looking, outspoken Belgian-born director, a foremost exponent of experimental and groundbreaking cinema from an early age. The daughter of a Jewish family, who suffered in Auschwitz, where many of them died, she moved from short films to long, sometimes tedious, but often hypnotically watchable arthouse films in which the camera's concentration on scenes for long periods of time could turn the viewer's pleasure into discomfort, or disinterest into perception. Her work included Hanging Out in Yonkers (1973), Jeanne Dielman (1975), Les Rendezvous d'Anna (1978), Toute Une Nuit (1982), Letters Home (1986), American Stories (1989), From the East (1993), A Couch in New York (1996), La Captive (2000), Demain On Demenage (2004), Almayer's Folly (2011) and the documentary No Home Movie (2015). She committed suicide.
