Burly, cherub-faced improvisational comedian who began in children's TV, later appeared in films and came into huge demand as a voice-over artist in animation. It was in the English-language version of a Japanese feature cartoon, Alakazam the Great (1960), in fact, that his genial tones were first heard on film. Subsequently, he appeared before the cameras in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), Eight on the Run/Eight on the Lam (1967), Viva Max (1969), Sonic Boom (1974), The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh (1979), The Longshot (1986), Moon Over Parador (1988), The Flintstones (1994), The Shadow (1994), The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle (2000) and Swing (2003), his last. More recently, his voice was heard again in The Smurfs (2011) and The Smurfs 2 (2013), as Papa. His wife Eileen died in 2009 after 60 years of marriage.
