Jean Kent

Actress

Born - 29 June 1921, Brixton, London, England
Died - 30 November 2013

The last of the 'Gainsborough ladies', this dark-haired, minxishly attractive British actress was the daughter of variety performers and in films as a young teenager. But it was in period romantic drama - the forerunners of 'bodice rippers' of later years - alongside such co-stars as Margaret Lockwood and Patricia Roc, that she made her name. Did not renew her studio contract in the early 1950s and was never the same force, despite being equally able to play vivacious or spiteful, and excelling at femmes fatales. After a debut in The Rocks of Valpre/High Treason (1934), the actress (born Joan Field) made Who's Your Father? (1935), Frozen Limits (1939), It's That Man Again (1942), Fanny by Gaslight (1944), 2,000 Women (1944), The Wicked Lady (1945), The Rake's Progress (1945), Carnival (1946), Caravan (1946), Good Time Girl (1947), Sleeping Car to Trieste (1948), Trottie True (1949), The Woman in Question (1950), The Browning Version (1951), The Lost Hours (1952), Before I Wake (1955), Grip of the Strangler (1958), Beyond This Place/Web of Evidence (1959), Bluebeard's 10 Honeymoons (1960) and Shout at the Devil (1976), her last - although she was later in the feature-length TV pilot Missing Persons in 1990. She died following a fall at her home.
