Anne Francis

Actress

Born - 16 September 1930, Ossining, New York, USA
Died - 2 January 2011

Tall for the Hollywood of the 1950s at 5ft 8in, this sulky-looking blonde with the distinctive 'beauty mole' and forthright acting style was poorly used by two studios, Fox and MGM, before finding a niche in TV history as the judo-throwing private eye Honey West in 1965. The series was short-lived but is now a cult item, as is Anne's best-remembered film role, Altaira in Forbidden Planet (1956). She was a child model at six and on Broadway at 11, before a film debut in Summer Holiday (1946), though the flop musical wasn't released for two years. Other films of her earlier Hollywood days included This Time for Keeps (1947), Portrait of Jennie (1948), So Young, So Bad (1950). Elopement (1951), Lydia Bailey (1952), Dreamboat 1952), Rogue Cop (1954), Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), Blackboard Jungle (1955) and The Rack (1956). After several years in TV series, she returned to movies to make The Satan Bug (1964), Brainstorm (1965), largely cut from Funny Girl (1968), The Love God? (1969), Pancho Villa (1972), Survival (1976), Born Again (1978) and many TV movies. Her last theatrical feature was Lover's Knot in 1996, and her last TV appearance came in 2004. Survivor of a lung cancer battle in 2007, she died from cancer of the pancreas.
