Distinguished, burly, bearded Czech cinematographer, often associated with a fellow Czech, director Milos Forman. Beginning his career in Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic) in the early 1960s, he shot such films as The Loves of a Blonde (1965) and The Firemen's Ball (1967), then photographed If... (1968) and O Lucky Man! (1973) in the UK before moving to Hollywood in the late 1970s: Hair (1979), Ragtime (1981), Silkwood (1983), Amadeus (1984), FX Murder by Illusion (1985), Funny Farm (1988), Awakenings (1990), A League of Their Own (1992), The Preacher's Wife (1996) and Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), his last.
